| 801 | [From "The Barters of Avondale"] William Talmadge (Bill) Barter moved to Vancouver in 1911 and then to Los Angeles in 1928 to join his two brothers James and John. He worked with them for many years in the building business. In the late 1940's he returned to Canada to live in Gibsons Landing in retiremenmt. Claims also some land in New town in consequence of clearing three fourths of an acre of land in that township. Gave intelligence to the rebels at Oak Park that the King's troops were pursuing them up the river, in consequence of which they escaped." John moved to Penobscot, Maine with his wife and her family three years after the Loyalists arrived. Since the Loyalists arrived in 1783, this would mean that they moved to Maine in 1786. By or about 1790, John & his family came to Hallowell (now present-day Clinton), Maine and settled north of what is now known as Noble Ferry. | SHAW, John (I000747)

SHAW, was also her first cousin because his father, Ammi, and Harriet?s father, Jonathan, were brothers. John F. Shaw was about 15-20 years older than his cousin-wife. I?m not sure but they may have gotten divorced or (more likely) he may have died sometime before August 1869, for she got married that month to Daniel Rideout. Harriet married the Rev. George Orser in August 1879?after the death of his first wife Abigail in July 1879 (who was also Harriet?s older sister). According to my calculations, Harriet was about 54 & the Reverend George was about 66 when they married. | 804 | [from Wayne Delong http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/d/e/l/Wayne-A-Delong-rothesay/GENE5-0008.html#CHILD14 ] Jonathan had moved to Wakefield with his bros. & family by 1802?at some point after 1806, he became a Baptist minister The Wakefield Baptist Church records reveal a little more about the Shaw family in an entry dated Saturday, 22 Feb 1806: The Church ??Had a Conference the 14th Conference Meeting at Jas Yorke?s where the Greatest Part of the Church Met and most of them Renewed their Covenant and all Enjoyed the Love of God?John Shaw formerly Deacon of a Congregation Church in Maugerville and Mary Shaw his wife Put themselves under the care and watch of the church....? In another entry dated Thursday, 4 October 1808: ?This was the 37 Conference that the Church held? John Shaw and Mary Shaw his wife and Jonathan Shaw Put themselves under the Care of the Church anew.? John died July 1814 in Lower Wakefield. His wife, Mary, died 29 November 1820, also in Lower Wakefield. They both died at the home of their son, Henry A. On 9 Oct 1826, the Baptist church received its first land grant in Wakefield. On that date, Charles Bowyer & his wife deeded a quarter of acre of land "...to Nathaniel Churchhill, Charles McMullen, Elisha Shaw & Jonathan Shaw, trustees for the denomination of Christians called Free Will Baptists" The 1851 census lists an illegitimate grandson as living with the Rev. Jonathan Shaw & his wife that year. His name was Paren Wats Shaw and he was born in 1849. Who is this person & who are his parents? I found a gravestone for Paran W. Shaw (28 Nov 1854-27 Aug 1917) at the Wakefield Community Cemetery in New Brunswick & he's buried with his wife, Catherine (9 April 1858-11 Nov 1928). Another source reveals that Paren Shaw & Catherine BURLOCK, both of Brighton, M. 22 Mar 1874 at the residence of her father. Are these two Paren W. Shaws one in the same? It seems quite likely. Could his tombstone have the wrong birth year? I think it could have the wrong birth year listed because he was likely an illegitimate child. John, Mary and their children came to the Saint John River in 1763 with the first permanent English-speaking settlers. The Shaw family lived first in the town of Maugerville [pronounced "Major-ville"]. They received their land grant on 31 Oct 1765 from the Nova Scotia government. By July 1783, the Shaws had moved across the river to Oromocto. According to the Studholm Report, they had 6 children, a log house and approximately 6 acres of land cleared. John had been in possession about 5 years. During the American Revolution, the elder John SHAW is said to have supported the colonists. Many of his neighbors knew him as a patriot, but he was known as a rebel to the arriving Loyalists. It is unknown whether this had an impact on John?s decision to move, but about 1802/1803 he & his family left Oromocto and settled in Old Wakefield. Another source states they moved to Wakefield "...in 1800 to live with their son Henry A. Shaw, who had come up the river...three years before"

| 806 | [from Wayne Delong] In 1816, William Jr. ORSER petitioned the government for the land of his brother John, who had been killed fighting in the 1812 war. In 1818, he was granted 300 acres of land in Carleton Co. and it was there that he built a home. In the spring of 1831, he sold his farm to his younger half-brother Evard (s/o William ORSER & Mary BLAKE) for fifty pounds; Evard ORSER signed a ten-year note on the farm. Evard was M. to Abby SHAW. William Jr. & Mary were to move to Kingston [Upper Canada?present day Ontario] & they left for Saint John City in 1831 to board a ship bound for Kingston. | 809 | [Geoffrey and Kristen Bronner] Master of St. John's College 1547. Then D.D. and Vice Chancellor of the University. Master of Trinity College and Chaplain to King Edward VI (1551). Dr. Bill lost all these positions during the reign of Queen Mary I. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I he was restored to Master of Trinity College (1559) and became a Fellow and then Provost of Eton College. In 1560 he became the first Dean of Westminster Abbey. Did William Bill marry? The official history at Westminster Abbey (see below) says no but some amateur sources suggest that he did marry ca 1542 and actually had three children, Mary ca 1543, William ca 1547, and Charles ca 1550. He is listed on www.westminster-abbey.org among names of people buried or commemorated there: William was a son of John and Margaret Bill of Ashwell in the county of Hertfordshire. His brothers were John, a lawyer of Ashwell and Thomas, M.D. (died 1552), physician to Henry VIII and Edward VI. His sisters were Mary, who married Francis Samwell and Elizabeth, who married Thomas Gosnold. William was educated at St John's College, Cambridge, becoming Master there and Doctor of Divinity in 1547. He was elected Master of Trinity College in 1551, became Lord High Almoner 1558-61 and assisted Archbishop Parker in revising the liturgy of Edward VI. He was installed as Dean of Westminster 30 June 1560 (the first Dean since Elizabeth I established the Abbey as a Collegiate Church). But he died the following year and was buried in the chapel of St Benedict, where his small figure in brass on a low tomb still remains. He was not married. The inscription around the edge of the tomb can be translated: "Here lies William Bill, D.D., Dean of Westminster, President of Eton College and head of Trinity in Cambridge, and Chief Almoner to the most serene princess Queen Elizabeth. He died 15 July 1561." The inscription on the brass plate below his effigy can be translated as "Bill was himself a good man and a lover of virtue; he taught the learned and was himself learned. He was careful of his office and a teacher of probity. He accomplished many things well by speaking little. The country has lost a prudent and the Queen a faithful servant, and the poor man laments at his father's passing. And their Head has left three colleges mournful, a Head such as I deem they will not have again for a long time. Either I loved him too much while he lived, or he was a great loss to his country when he died." The epitaph was obviously written by someone who knew him well. Originally there were four shields with coats of arms but all have now disappeared from the tomb. In heraldic terms his arms are ermine, two bills (or billhooks) in saltire proper, on a chief azure, between two pelicans heads erased argent, a pale of the last charged with a rose gules (ie. two silver pelicans heads between a red rose at the top of the shield, with two crossed billhooks on an ermine background below). | BILL, William (I010356)
