| 901 | [JohnEdgarMarch.ged] Lieutenant Joses Bucknam was the ancestor of the Malden (now Everett) Bucknam family and of the Swan family of Everett which intermarried with the Bucknam s. Joses's wife was Judith Worth, who is referred to by him in his will as "J ude." Joses Bucknam lived with his family of eight children in the Bucknam ho mestead (see notes for William, Joses's father). Their names were: Joses B., Hannah, Samuel, Jude, Susanna, William, Edward, and Lydia. He drew his will o n August 14, 1694, bequeathing to his son Samuel the Bucknam homestead. He sp ecified that Samuel was to have the four acres upon which the homestead stood , the twenty-acre lot, and six additional acres. This is the way the will was worded: "4 acres adjoining, butting to the homestead so it may reach to the spring for ye benefit of watering." Joses had purchased additional land in 16 77 from the lot known as Johnson's Playne, which consisted of fourteen acres bounded by what is now Norwood Street. He gave the balance of his land to h is other sons, and money to his daughters. Joses Bucknam died on August 24, 1 694 at the age of fifty-three and was buried in Bell Rock Cemetery. Joses ser verd in King Philips' war under Capt. Wheeler 24 June 1676 for which service he received £01, 10 sh, 10 p. On 1 October 1674, "Philip Atwood of Mauldon ... planter, with the assent & consent of Rachell my wife," sold to Jose Bucknam of Malden seven acres of land, partly in Malden and partly in Charlestown; P hilip and Rachel Atwood acknowledged this deed on 24 October 1674, he signing and she making her mark [MLR 7:176]. He made his will August 22, 1694, whic h was proved December 11, 1694. He mentions his wife "Jude", his sons Joses, Samuel, John and Edward; his daughters Hannah Tuttle, Elizabeth Meelen and hi s daughters "Jude", Sarah, Mary and Susanna Bucknam. [Pioneers of Massachusetts] He was an inhabitant of Charlestown in 1630. Directory of the Ancestral Heads of New En gland Families 1620-1700, pg cxli; KNOWER, George, resident of Charlestown, M ass., 1631. Thomas, brother of the preceding, was at Charlestown, Mass., 1631 Malden Families, pg. 431 Thomas Knower of London, a clothier, appears as an inhabitant of Charlestown in 1630. He was set in the bilboes of Charlestown, 8 Apr. 1632. Savage supposes that he returned to England and brought his fami ly in the "Abigail" in July 1635. At least, one Thomas Knower, age 33 and N oel Knower, age 29, and Sarah Knower, age 17 [although she should have been a round 13], were among the passengers to be transported to New England, 17 jul y 1635 in the "Abigail". (Hotten's Original Lists, 92). In his "Planters of t he Commonwealth",pg. 75, Banks says, he came from London and settled in Charl estown. Gov. Winthrop in his journal says that "One Knore of Charlestown, com ing down Mistick in a small boat laden with wood was found (dead) in it", Nov . 1641. (pg. 52). The inventory, taken 19 Nov. 1641, mentions his two bibles, 20 acres above the ponds, 4 acres within the neck and 5 acres near Bunker's farm. Charles and Frances came to Hampton before 1838. They joined the Baptist Church in Hampton on April 23, 1842, along with their sons, James and Charles. In 1861, they were still in the Bridgetown district; he was aged 60-70; his wife 50-60. In 1871 were aged 74 and 65, respectively. Apparently, they moved about a great deal in hteir younger days, as Granville Township records list their children as being born in Cornwallis, Peticodiac, and Granville. Charles Stead and his family moved to Brookfield in December 1842, but returned to Hampton the next year. Chute said that in old age, Charles and Frances STEADMAN lived with their daughter Julia Ann Loyte in Lynn, Massachusetts; where Frances died in October of 1873 at age 68 and Charles in 1876 at age 79. | STEADMAN, Charles Chipman (I009236)

Boston Globe obituary - Jan 1981: "Walter STEADMAN "Boston fire lieutenant, at 72 "Walter STEADMAN, 72, of Dorchester, a retired Boston fire lieutenant, died yesterday in the Deaconess Hospital. "He was born in Dorchester, was graduated from Boston English High School, and worked as a printing pressman for the Schrafft's Candy Co. "Mr. STEADMAN joined the Fire Department on Oct. 16, 1940, and was assigned to Engine Co. 19 in Dorchester. He later served at Engine Co. 48 in Hyde Park, and Engine Cos. 46, 16, and 20, all in Dorchester. He was promoted to lieutenant on Dec. 7, 1949, and retired on July 1, 1970. "He was a past member of the Boston Fire Fighters Local 71, and the Boston Fireman's Mutual Relief Assn. "He leaves three sons, Walter of San Diego, Calif., Robert of Quincy and John STEADMAN of Dorchester; two daughters, Joan Mullane of Quincy and Delores Murphy of Holbrook; two brothers, Malcolm and I. She married Edgar Gates and lived and raised her family in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. She was age 81 in 1957 when Jessica STEADMAN received a letter from her. The following is from her obituary in The Spectator, Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Wednesday, November 21, 1962: "Mrs. J. Edgar Gates The death of Mrs. J. Edgar Gates of South Milford occurred at the Woodland Nursing Home where she had been a chronic invalid for four years, aged 86 years. Before marriage she was Miss Dora STEADMAN of Beaconsfield, Annapolis County, daughter of the late Robert and Margaret (Guest) STEADMAN. She was a very valued knitter for the Red Cross. Her husband and one daughter Edith (Mrs. Ford Naylor) of Chicago predeceased her. She is survived by two sons Kenneth in Pittsfield, New Hampshire, and Ralph in South Milford, N.S. and six daughters, Gertrude (Mrs. Robert Wood) of Annapolis Royal; Felicia (Mrs. Charles DonNellan) of NEWTON, Mass.; Dorothy (Mrs. Paul Cross) of Salem, Mass.; Myrtle (Mrs. Fred Snow) of Digby; Oda (Mrs. Lyman Pyne) of Smiths Cove; and Miss Minnie Gates of Annapolis Royal. There also survives one brother Arch Guest of Lynn, Mass.; and a half-sister, Marjorie (Mrs. Haywood) of Salem, Mass; and 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, 2pm from the United Baptist Church, South Milford, conducted by the Rev. Paul Underwood, with internment in the adjoining cemetery." He married Princess Annie Louise Hudson on September 10, 1919, in Canton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. They were married by N. B. Rogers. He was living in Canton at the time and was working as a barber. They seem to have separated for a time after the marriage. In the 1920 census, she is listed as Louise P. Hudson and residing with her sister Flora Hudson Robinson at 195 Eutaw Avenue in Lynn, MA. He was listed as boarding along with his brother Curtis at 30 High Street, Lynn. He was listed as age 28, married, and immigrating to the US in 1919. She was listed as age 18, single, and immigrating to the US in 1918. Their only known child, Ernest Hudson STEADMAN was born in 1921. At that time they were living at 84 Marianna Street in Lynn. Ernest listed himself as a 28 year old restaurant employee and she was listed as age 19. Louise died of Tuberculosis in 1929. They were living at 88 Clarendon Avenue in Lynn. She was working as a dressmaker. After her death, Ernest married Dorothy Morgan. They had a daughter Shirley and lived at 21 Glenwood Street in Lynn until their deaths. Ernest worked as a chef for General Electric. On his death certificate, he was listed as William Ernest STEADMAN and his occupation was given as working in the steam turban department of General Electric. According to her application to citizenship (that was never filed), her parents were Angus MacMaster and Margaret MacEachern. (Other data suggests that her mother's name was MacEachen.) She came to Massachusetts on October 9, 1899 on the Steamship St. Croix, sailing from Port Hastings in Inverness County, Cape Breton and landed at Boston Massachusetts. She travelled as a second cabin passenger and travelled with Catherine Cameron, Jessie MacDonald, and Mary MacEachern. Her destination was Gloucester, MA where she was coming to stay with a Mrs. Brophy. She married Ira Malcom STEADMAN in Boston on 4 September 1902. Her last child, Ira Joseph, was born after he was killed in a trolley accident on election night, 7 November 1916, on the Fort Point Bridge. | 942 | [JohnSteadman.FTW] Provided by: John B. Lisle Jessie STEADMAN was born in Boston on 9 October 1914 as the seventh child of Ira Malcolm STEADMAN and his wife Jessie MacMaster. She contracted Polio when she was 18 months old, probably from her cousin Hugh STEADMAN. Polio was a continuing struggle through her life. Her father was killed in a trolley accident when she was two and she was raised by her mother in Dorchester. Her mother died in 1938, and later that year she married Bernard Miethe of Dorchester. In the summer of 1954, they purchased the house at 27 Eastman Street that his father bought in 1903 and that he had been born in. He died just after Christmas in 1956. She continued to live in the house until 1998 when she could no longer manage living there. She had started having blackouts, and she broke her hip a few years before. She had had a pacemaker. But she developed a weakening of her legs that was ascribed to "old polio syndrome". In 1998 she moved to an assisted living home, Chelmsford Crossing, in Chelmsford, MA, near her son Frank's home. She was doing well until getting the flu in late January. Between her heart and the flu, her body weakened substantially and, except for a week at a nursing home in Billerica, she spent her last weeks at Lowell General Hospital. Jessie died about 4:00 am on Thursday morning, 8 April 1999, at Lowell General Hospital in Lowell, Massachusetts. Jessie had been sick for about twelve weeks before her death. About two weeks before her death she had gone from the hospital to a nursing home. After about 5 days she had a relapse and was readmitted to the hospital. She had a stroke during the night on Tuesday. She was waked at the Scally-Trayer Funeral Home in Dorchester on Sunday, 11 April 1999 from 4pm to 8pm. All of her children and grandchildren were there along with most of the Miethes, a number of her STEADMAN relatives and lost of her former neighbors from Eastman Street. Her funeral was on Monday, 12 April 1999, at 9:00 am at Holy Trinity Church in Boston with Father O'Regan presiding.
