    Notes
    • The 1871 census record for Alfred and Mary shows an Eliza Shaw, age 12, in the household. Since Eliza Shaw was not shown as a daughter of Alfred and Mary in the 1861 census, and since the 1871 census does not show relationships to heads of households, Eliza may not have been their daughter. George Hayward and Daniel Turner in their works on the Shaw family believe that Alfred and Mary had no children.
