  Notes	[StedmanJohnF..ged] Provided by: John B. Lisle William STEADMAN moved to New Brunswick in 1801. He was granted 300 acres in Dorchester, Westmoreland Co., New Brunswick on 8 Nov 1817 (p. 102, grant # 897). The family were staunch Baptists. Source: Resurgo, The History of Moncton, Volume 1, 1990 by Pincombe and Larracey, page 103 and 116. He married Hannah Trites, was a blacksmith by trade and came to the Bend from Cornwallis, Nova Scotia in 1802. His father-in-law, Christian Trites, conveyed fifty acres of land for 80 pounds on June 11, 1812, and he sold various portions of this land over the next thirty years. It was he who married Hannah, one of the six daughters of the first Christian Trites, built a house at the foot of what became Pleasant Street where their sons James, John and William were born. Page 178, On May 24, 1821, William and Hannah (Trites) STEADMAN sold half an acre of land at what is now the corner of STEADMAN and Kings Streets to Ichabod Lewis and Solomon Trites as trustees (of the Free Meeting House) for twenty pounds. Page 124, STEADMAN was the important street, with thirty one buildings, and Main between King and Telegraph held principal commerce. Date December 11 1889 County Westmorland Place Moncton Newspaper The Times The next settler of whom the writer has been able to get any record was the late William steadman, father of present Judge James Steadman of Fredericton, who came to the Bend of the Petitcodiac from Cornwallis, N.S. in the year 1801 or 1802 and built a house near the river bank at the foot of Pleasant street. That building was burned down, but the old house now standing there on its site, is the oldest structure now extant in the town of Moncton. Mr. Steadman was in his day an active business man and his sons, John Steadman, James Steadman, and William Steadman were also up to within a few years ago identified with the business and politics of the county. William Steadman accumulated a large amount of property at the Band, having purchased a large tract of land along Church street, extending back to the Robertson Creek and also the Steadman farm on the Mountain road, purchased by Messrs. Peters a few years ago and divided into lots. He died in the old house on the Mountain road some years ago. The late John Steadman was connected with many mining enterprises in which unfortunately he was not altogether successful, while James entered the ranks of the legal profession.
