Lisle As a young man, prior to his father's death in 1902, Steve worked in the Boston area in the grocery business and had contacts with his uncle Enoch and with his Uncle Major Wheelock and family in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He and Gertie and the children first lived on the homestead in Billtown. This was a farm of some 160 acres suitable for mixed farming. In December 1912, Stephen and family moved to Kentville, a distance of six miles, and he became a business partner with Ralph H. Lamont in the grocery business at the Red Store. Their home was eventually on W. Main Street. Ralph was the husband of his sister Harriet. Mother Elizabeth STEADMAN lived with Harriet and Ralph after Stephen was married. Stephen and Gertrude were buried in the cemetery in Kentville near the Lamonts. The plots are near the middle of the cemetery and can be seen from the highway. The STEADMAN homestead was 0.7 miles noth of Billtown corners and on the west side of the road. It was sold in 1912 and later was destroyed by fire. A new group of buildings now occupy the site. The Red Store, started in 1828 by James DeWolfe, has since been replaced. It was on the corner of Main and Cornwallis Streets, first known as Horton Corner.
