      Obituary

MADISON -- Donald L. Perkins, passed away peacefully surrounded by family Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006, at Maplecrest Rehabilitation & Living Center in Madison.

Don was born March 11, 1918, to Martelle and Alice Melinda (Duplisea) Perkins. He graduated from Madison Memorial High School with the class of 1936.

A self-taught machinist, engineer and businessman, Don, along with his brother, Elwood, expanded the family blacksmith shop, which was started by their father Martelle and uncle Herbert, into Donald Perkins Machine Shop that still thrives today with his two nephews, Dan and John Low, at the helm. A relentless worker, Don left his mark in every corner of the state and beyond.

Don was a devoted family man and always made certain that the needs of all family members were met. Don was also an active member of the greater community. Beyond the machine shop, he was best known for his participation with the Euclid Masonic Lodge 194 and the Kora Temple Shrine. He gave many hours of his time to those groups and their many charities.

He especially enjoyed his camp on Embden Pond built by his father, brother, friend Howard Reed, and surrounding family. Many happy years were spent there. He and Doris enjoyed snowmobiling with the Embden Snow Riders, get togethers with friends, picnics, camping trips, and fishing trips to Bulldog with his buddies.

Donald married Doris Ann Matthews on June 12, 1943. They built a home across the street from the machine shop and then had their beloved daughter, Penelope. They made 123 Madison Ave. their home together for 63 years.

Don was predeceased by his father; mother; brother and business partner, Elwood "Pot" Perkins; sisters Irma and Erva; and niece Mary Perkins.

Survivors include his wife, Doris; their daughter, Penelope Ann Denis and her husband, Russell; grandsons Derek D. Kyes of Canaan and Timothy A. Kyes of San Diego; sister-in-law Jennie Perkins; his sister's children, niece Martha Vogt and her husband, Bill, and niece Molly Baker, nephews John Low and wife, Jill, Dan Low and wife, Jean, Dave Low and companion, Debbie LoGerfo, who were like his own children, and nephew Lauren Harding; great-nieces Shelly, Justine and Stacy; and great-nephews Michael, Christopher and Matthew. He will be greatly missed by all.

Visiting hours will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Giberson Funeral Home, Maple Street, Madison. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Madison Congregational Church followed by a graveside service at Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family wants to extend a very special thank you to all the wonderful caregivers at Maplecrest for their loving support. From housekeeping to kitchen to nursing -- YOU ARE THE BEST!

In Donald's tradition of taking care of others, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital of Boston, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114, attn. Donations Department, or the Masonic Building Fund Euclid Lodge 194, P.O. Box 337, Madison, ME 04950.
