Miss Georgina Helen Trueman
Miss Georgina Helen Trueman, an unassuming teacher who earned the affection and respect of generations of local high school students, died at Queens General Hospital, Monday at he age of 68. Miss Trueman came to Liverpool in 1922 and spent the remainder of her life here. By the time she retired in 1959 she numbered a major portion of her adopted townsfolk among her former students. Few of them will forget her ability to bring life to a printed page, and for many she nurtured a fondness for literature that continues to enrich their lives. But English, while perhaps her favorite subject, was only on of the many she taught. At one period she and Ronald S. Longley, retiring vice-president of Acadia University, handled the entire curriculum of Liverpool High School. To all her instruction she brought a standard that served her pupils well, whether they ended their formal studies at graduation or went on, as scores of them did, to gratifying careers in the professions, science, education, business, government or military service. Some she had led some she had pushed, but Miss Trueman was proud of them all. In hospital near the end of her days, she was able to look back on her long career with obvious satisfaction, discussing the achievements of her boys and girls and recalling classroom incidents of long ago with humour and relish. Miss Trueman was a native New Brunswicker, born in Albert, Albert Co., in 1896, daughter of the late William Alder Trueman and his wife, the former Georgina Currie. She attended Netherwood School for Girls and graduated from the University of New Brunswick with her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1919. She returned to Netherwood to teach for two years, then attended the Provincial Normal College at Truro. She came from there to Liverpool and her first encounter with the public school system in which she was to work for the next four decades. She acquired her Master of Arts degree from Acadia University in 1940.
Retirement was not easily accomplished for Miss Trueman. She left it at some inconvenience to herself, and as a public service, to fill an empty classroom post during the entire 1959-1960 school year and again for six months in 1961. Her community work involved her as a valued member of the Women's Auxiliary, Trinity Anglican Church, the Liverpool Library Association, and Liverpool Business and Professional Women's Club. At one time she belonged to the Liverpool Home and School Association and the I. O. D. E. Miss Trueman is survived by one brother, E. Bayard Trueman, one sister, Grace W. Hazen, Rev. W. A. Trueman, 65 William Street, Yarmouth, N. S., and two nieces, Mrs. Donald Palmeter, France and Miss Nancy Hazen, Halifax. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock from Trinity Anglican Church of England Cemetery. |
